Malaysian Pepper Board Looking To Penetrate Middle East Market at Expo 2020 Dubai

DUBAI, 11 February 2022 – Ranked the fourth largest pepper producer within the International Pepper Community (IPC) member countries, Malaysia is spotlighting its sustainable initiatives and pepper products at Expo 2020 towards expanding into new markets across the region.

Malaysia Pepper Board Assistant Director Asmah Morshidi, said its participation in Malaysia Pavilion’s Sustainable Agricommodities (Food Agricommodities) Week at Expo 2020 Dubai is to increase the global visibility and availability of the high quality Sarawak Pepper, and ultimately increase its demand.

“MPB is seeking new opportunities to penetrate new markets in the Middle East, and expand its presence in current markets like Japan, China and Korea.

“This in turn will increase the value of Malaysian pepper which can benefit the pepper industry and country economy as a whole,” said Asmah.

The black pepper industry is one of the main pillars of Malaysia’s economy, contributing USD 581 million (RM2,434 million) to the nation’s GDP in 2020 and providing a livelihood for thousands of pepper farmers across Malaysia.

Nearly 98% of Malaysian pepper is produced in Sarawak, with whole black pepper as the most popular export accounting for nearly 70%. The remaining 30% of exports consists of white pepper, green pepper in brine, and value-added pepper which are pepper products that have higher value than normal pepper as they go under a more detailed process from grading, colour sorting, sterilisation, lab testing, and quality control.

Asmah further added that Malaysia has implemented accredited certification schemes, regulatory guidelines, best international agriculture practices and introduced cutting-edge technologies, by the upstream and downstream industries, to ensure the future prosperity of the sector.

During the week’s programme, MPB will hold pocket talks to enable industry players to share discoveries, innovations and challenges in the global pepper industry.

“Expo 2020 Dubai is an opportunity for MPB to discuss new products, import regulations, consumption trends, quality control and offer trade deals to existing and prospective buyers,” Malaysian Pepper Board researcher Dr. Khew Choy Yuen said.

MPB researchers will also speak on various new technologies developed including new R&D products to enhance flowering in black pepper, sustainable organic pepper farming practices and crop improvement to increase the economic value of black pepper.

These research findings have the potential to achieve sustainable black pepper production.

Keeping tabs on technology advancements, MPB has adopted digital technologies for identifying pest, disease and nutritional problems in pepperm through the use of various mobile phone applications. Adoption of these technologies has helped early detection of diseases and nutrient deficiency problems in pepper vines to ensure sustainable pepper production while saving costs and time in pepper farm management.

The MPB will also highlight value-added pepper products produced by SMEs, and premium pepper such as Creamy White Pepper which is halal certified. In addition, Malaysia’s pepper is a higher quality pepper in terms of pungency, flavour and aroma as compared with other pepper producing countries, Malaysian Pepper Board researcher Dr. Kevin Muyang added.

DUBAI, 17 January 2022 – Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) is participating in the World Expo 2020 in Dubai, where it will be showcasing made in Malaysia Rubber Products to the world, at the Malaysia Pavilion.

The Malaysia Pavilion is themed Energising Today- Exploring Sustainable Agricommodity, aims to capture the country’s commitment to ensuring a secure and sustainable future by balancing socioeconomic progress with environmental concerns. Sustainable agricommodities, including rubber, will be featured permanently in the Pavilion display and the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) will be leading the two week-long trade and business programmes on agricommodity.

Malaysia’s overall participation in Expo 2020 Dubai is led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Malaysia Pavilion will host 26 weekly thematic business programmes throughout the expo to promote its sustainable industries including agricommodity, which will also be a permanent display in the Pavilion.

MRC’s effort to tap the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) market is evident with the establishment of its Middle East office in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in September 2021. Among the objectives are to explore and facilitate potential joint ventures and foreign investment from the MENA region. It also provides information and educational materials to buyers and end consumers on quality rubber and rubber products.

Malaysian Rubber Products Virtual Showcase (MaRViS)

Capitalising on the huge reach of Expo 2020, MRC will be launching Malaysian Rubber Products Virtual Showcase (MaRViS), an online platform that facilitates online business engagements between international buyers and Malaysian rubber product manufacturers.

At a time when the world is struggling to adapt to the many changes in day-to-day business caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this platform is hoped to set the wheels in motion to encourage the industry players to embrace digitalisation in their business dealings.

MaRVis is an extension of MRC Marketplace, a buyer seller website that has been around for more than a decade. While MRC Marketplace provides contact details of all Malaysian rubber and rubber product manufacturers and traders, MaRViS is complementing MRC Marketplace to provide better user experience.

This virtual platform is able to provide a holistic online experience for international buyers. Some of the interesting features include virtual exhibitions, live chat and online business matching. Important events such as the e-Global Sourcing Mission (e-GSM) and online seminars will also be held on MaRViS’ platform. Malaysian rubber manufacturers can leverage on MaRVis to feature their products and attract international buyers without worrying about geographical boundaries.

Some of the key rubber products that will be featured on the platform include precured treads; engineered rubber products used in construction, railway, mining and marine; latex foam and mattresses; rubber medical devices such as medical gloves, condoms and rubber catheters; rubber gloves; rubber automotive components; and green rubber.

MRC has lined up exciting events during the Expo 2020 Dubai, including natural rubber clay product demonstration. The product is safe for children, non-oily, non colour staining, non-hardening, nontoxic, water resistant and re-usable for more than 5 years. The product is invented by Malaysian manufacturer and is suitable for modelling and even to make artwork on canvas.

Arab Health 2022

For 2022, apart from Expo Dubai 2020, MRC will be participating yet again in Arab Health 2022, from 24 to 27 January 2022. This is mainly to promote made in Malaysia high-quality rubber medical devices. MRC is leading eight Malaysian rubber medical device manufacturers and exporters in its pavilion to participate in the Arab Health 2022 exhibition showcasing a wide range of quality rubber medical devices. Business matching will also be arranged between potential buyers and Malaysian companies. MRC has been participating in the Arab Health since 2008, with a total of 14 participations altogether. Since the pandemic, Arab Health has been remodelled into a hybrid event for year 2021 and 2022.

The Rubber Forum 2022

YB Datuk Hajah Zuraida Kamaruddin, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Malaysia, launched the Rubber Forum 2022 at the Malaysia Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai 2020. Natural rubber and other rubber accounted for RM7.70 billion of total exports, while rubber products contributed RM55.47 billion.

The export value of the Malaysian rubber industry in 2021 (Jan-Oct) increased by 71% to RM63.16 billion in the 2021 (Jan – Oct) compared to RM37 billion in the same period last year. The industry performance is contributed greatly by the latex goods sector comprising medical devices such as gloves, catheters, and condoms. The current COVID-19 pandemic generated a substantial additional demand for rubber gloves and other rubber-based healthcare products. Latex goods sector showed strong performance amounting to RM51.4 billion, an increase of 86.3% over the same period last year at RM27.6 billion. The sector maintained its pace as the leader of the rubber products exports from January to October 2021, at 92.7%. These figures are not including Heveawood related exports.

Rubber Forum 2022 succeeded to serve as a platform for knowledge and experience sharing on the latest updates on the Malaysian and the global rubber industry. Industry players benefited in formulating strategies deemed necessary particularly in addressing the present and future challenges.

MALAYSIAN SELECTED FOR UN-UAE SDG ART PROJECT

DUBAI, 25 November 2021 – Like many people, Saadiah Sulaiman had no idea what the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was nor what the fuss and buzz around the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was about.

But the 52-year-old from Sarawak who has been living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since 2007 is now an expert in her own right, at least on what constitutes Decent Work and Economic Growth – the 8th goal.

This is thanks to the SDGs Through Art project, a collaborative initiative of the United Nations (UN) and the UAE which was kicked-off in 2020 to enhance awareness on the ambitious targets adopted by over 190 member states at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.

Supported by Dubai-based ZeeArts Gallery, Saadiah was among 17 UAE-based artists from various nationalities who were selected for the socially-engaged artistic project to commemorate UN’s 75th anniversary last year. Each artist was commissioned to explore and research on the assigned goal and develop specific artistic expressions that would help in engaging the public around the respective SDGs and mobilise them to support the implementation.

“Frankly yet quite unfortunately, SDGs is not a day-to-day topic typically discussed over coffee or casual conversations. The only difference for me was that once I agreed to be part of this special project, I felt a rush sense of duty of care for me as an artist to spread awareness through my art and act on the SDGs in particular SDG No 8 – Decent Work & Economic growth.

“The more I researched and discussed with others, the clearer the goals become. The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was meant for us, desperately calling for collective actions to work together and commit to all the goals for the benefit of everyone, leaving no one behind, “said the mother of three children.

The artworks were finally unveiled at the UN Hub at Expo 2020 Dubai under the title “Painting a Better World” for a week-long exhibition from 9 to 13 November, after a one-year postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The focal point of my creation is the self-winding watch which continues to function as long as all components work. Metaphorically, this infinite mechanism represents sustainability in the way that socio-economic and environmental inter dependencies are wisely maintained.

“The focal point of my creation is the self-winding watch which continues to function as long as all components work. Metaphorically, this infinite mechanism represents sustainability in the way that socio-economic and environmental inter dependencies are wisely maintained.

“The SDG goal on “Decent Work” is represented by the wheels and gears that portray the endless opportunities created for everyone within the society, regardless of race, gender, age and disabilities. The tints of gold, bronze and silver symbolise fair value of rewards and security of human capital. When Decent Work is achieved, Economic Growth will naturally follow across the globe, represented by the watch’s dials. And the varying sizes of circles depict the growing economies, “explained Saadiah on the concept of her artwork.

She based her illustration on the mechanics of a watch because like time, sustainability is crucial to the human race, adding that a sustainable way of living, must become as available to all as it is to wear time on our wrist.

“However, it will take the cohesiveness and togetherness of everyone on this planet working towards these SDGs to achieve human survival in the modernised and heavily industrialised world,” said Saadiah.

Besides Saadiah, other artists who had contributed their creative efforts to the project hailed from developed and developing countries namely, the Netherlands, Sweden, India, Cape Verde, Syria, Iraq, Armenia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, South Africa, Iran, Mauritius, Argentina and UAE.

Saadiah, a quantity surveyor-turned-artist, has also recently signed up as a volunteer with the Malaysia Pavilion, confessing that she instantly felt at home when visiting the pavilion and jumped on the opportunity to contribute towards the success of the country’s participation at Expo.

“As an EXPO 2020 Dubai volunteer since 2017, my first assigned task was to be part of the Opening Ceremony cast. So, I had to postpone my intention to volunteer at the Malaysia Pavilion.

“The sustainability trademarks are carefully incorporated in every aspect of our Rainforest Canopy Pavilion. This made me feel so proud. To be a volunteer at the Malaysia Pavilion would be to me, an icing on top of the cake,” gushed Saadiah.

Deputy Commissioner-General for UN at Expo 2020 Dr Dena Assaf said the artworks will be placed on a roadshow to all the seven emirates to promote the SDGs.

The UN Hub is located in the Opportunity Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, the thematic pavilion that examines how to unlock the potential of individuals and communities in creating positive change for people and planet with a focus on the SDGs. The UN has planned a series of events and activities that reflect the values of multilateralism and showcase the role of international cooperation and joint actions to overcome global challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change and achieving the SDGs.

ENERGISING YOUR ACTIONS FOR A BETTER EARTH

DUBAI, 18 November 2021 –The Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai today rolled out its #EnergiseMY social campaign which is a clarion call for the public to share their stories of the changes – no matter how big or small -they are making towards a more sustainable future.

Derived from the Pavilion theme of “Energising Sustainability”, this social-media friendly campaign highlights the efforts of changemakers, known as “Energisers” – individuals or groups who have made a difference within their sphere of influence, be it in the areas of social, economic, or environment.

These Energisers’ actions can be anything ranging from a simple act of kindness of donating clothes to the needy or repurposing household items in the garden or building a home for a local community.

The social media campaign is an extension of the Pavilion’s #MyButterflyEffect campaign which aims to create a rippling affect through exemplary actions undertaken by Malaysia Pavilion at the World Expo. The #MyButterflyEffect campaign ambassador is His Highness Tunku Zain Al-Abidin Tuanku Muhriz.

“The intention behind #EnergiseMY is to inspire people to make a difference in their own capacities, regardless of how big or small, as the world moves towards building a more sustainable future,” said His Highness Tunku Zain Al-Abidin Tuanku Muhriz during the launch of the #EnergiseMY at the Malaysia Pavilion today.

“This is essentially what our brand campaign for the Malaysia Pavilion – #MyButterflyEffect – stands for; that our everyday actions are small steps leading to a bigger movement for a better community and a better world,” he added.

His Highness Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin Ibni Tuanku Muhriz also kicks off #EnergiseMY as the first Energiser. He is an outspoken advocate for sustainable growth efforts and local community empowerment.

“There has always been keen interest among Malaysians for great causes but as we get more hopeful about a post-Covid future, it is vital to refocus that energy with the realisation and progress made during the pandemic. #EnergiseMY provides a perfect opportunity to harness and elevate that energy for the mutual benefit of all our communities,” he added.

Also present at the event was Mr Syed Ahmad Syed Mustafa, Chief Operating Officer Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) who quoted, “One of the larger purpose of our participation in Expo 2020 is to meaningfully engage people into joining the sustainability conversation – especially the youths. They are our future leaders who will inherit this planet and we want to do our part in inspiring them.”

Malaysian singer and actress Sasha Saidin is another Energiser who started her change at home. She said, “Everything starts at home. By teaching my family to reduce, reuse, and recycle, we hope to encourage others in our communities to take their own steps towards a sustainable future. We make conscious efforts in the little things like sorting our trash, using reusable food containers and bags.”

Meaningful change is a shared responsibility and cannot be achieved alone. Everyone’s small steps contribute towards a bigger purpose, and we can all start with something as simple as taking part in the sustainability conversation to raise collective awareness.

Be a part of the movement!

No matter how big or small, your contribution in Malaysia’s journey towards sustainability deserves to be applauded. Join the #EnergiseMY movement and be featured on the Malaysia Expo 2020 Dubai social media pages. Follow these 3 simple steps to nominate and be featured:

1. Nominate someone who can #EnergiseMY (someone whom you know is creating
meaningful change within your circle of friends or local communities).
2. Share with us an image of your Energiser in action and tell us about their amazing work!
3. Use the hashtag #EnergiseMY and tag @MalaysiaExpo2020

Organisers HDC and MATRADE, both agencies under the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), will be using the Halal Cluster Week to showcase the country’s extensive capabilities in managing a global halal ecosystem and simultaneously, attract global players to use Malaysia as a viable hub for the production of halal products and service.

At the Halal Cluster Week, HDC will be organising daily thought leadership and pocket talks sessions, networking engagements and business meeting sessions throughout the five-day business mission to drive investor interest, raise awareness and initiate potential partnerships and collaborations.

“The Halal Cluster Week in Dubai is an opportunity for us to increase global awareness of Malaysia’s capabilities in halal production and promotion, be it for halal funding with Islamic finance, or for halal integrity and traceability in the logistic industry which is today one of the key sectors that is ripe for further development and investment,” said HDC’s CEO Hairol Ariffein Sahari, during the launch of Halal Cluster Week.

MATRADE will be organizing business matching sessions via the Export Acceleration Mission (EAM) on Digital Halal Ecosystem, where a total of 19 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) from Malaysia will be physically showcasing and offering various halal products and services for the global marketplace.

According to MATRADE’s Deputy CEO, Sharimahton Mat Saleh “The Export Acceleration Mission (EAM) is a great platform to position Malaysian companies to the world and at the same time paved the way for exporters to discover the vast business opportunities in West Asia. In addition, the Malaysian delegates will also get first-hand information from the relevant authorities in the UAE during the trade mission.” She added “In 2020, The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was Malaysia’s largest trading partner within West Asia region boasting RM20.65 billion worth of products such as Electrical & Electronic (E&E), Jewellery, Machinery, equipment and parts, Petroleum Products and Manufactures of Metal.”

Aside from the 19 companies physically brought in, MATRADE is also continuously promoting Malaysian Halal products and services through MIHAS virtual exhibition which happens concurrently until 31 December 2021 and participated by 500 exhibitors.

HDC will be showcasing its recently launched Halal Integrated Platform (HIP) by bringing 100 companies virtually, via its Digital Augmented Reality Showcase of Halal Malaysia (DASH) platform, enabling local Halal SMEs to showcase their products and services interactively via Augmented Reality (AR) in 2D, 3D and video formats seamlessly worldwide.

HDC will also be announcing several international collaborations throughout the week, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between HDC and the Chartered Institute Logistics and Transport (CILT) International, which will culminate in the development of the Halal Supply Chain Management System (HSCMS).

The exchange ceremony of the MoU was held during the launch and HDC was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Hairol Ariffein Sahari and CILT by The Hon. Dato’ Hj. Muhammad Muhiyuddin Bin Abdullah, President of the Chartered Malaysia Institute Of Logistics & Transport, CMILT.
